They have upset the edges of the planchets since the 1790's. The Castaining machine, though primarily intended to apply a letter edge, also performed the function of providing the planchet with the thickened upset edge that differentiates a blank from a planchet. The high speed upsetting machine that we are more familiar with was developed by Franklin Peale in the 1830's after his return from examining the Mints of Europe.
Thank You , I only watched a few videos to see it for myself . It doesn't delve that deep ,it just shows a different process than what we Use today at the Mints .
