1944 Steel Wheat Penny

    The 43 shows like almost a copper color-if it is steel it could be rust. It is plated zinc color with with a light brown sheen..

    My dad passed 15 years ago and I put the coins away, My wife was cleaning out a cabinet and found these, I do not remember receiveing these. At the time I was working on his house to sell, busy, I just forgot the coins.

    That is rust on the 1943, and I am pretty sure I see copper showing through on the 1944. Unfortunately that would mean it is a normal coin that has been plated. You can weigh it to be sure, or post better pictures, but I am pretty certain that is what you have.

    My dad has a lot of foreign coins, many silver coins.
    It weighs 3.1 so the plating is steel? My 43 only weighs 2.5-2.6. I think your right..

    So when I put the magnet next to the 43 it jumped where as the plated just held on lightly. Thanks for yoyr time.

    Most likely nickel plating. Pure nickel is magnetic.
