I bought a roll of Mercury Dime and found two same date with different shape of mintmark. One is normal and other aren't. I can't find cherrypickers' guide. I wonder if you can give me some feedback on these coins? Thanks.
The one on the left is the ball serif "S". The one on the right is the straight serif "S". The positions of the mintmarks vary because they were punched into the individual dies by hand. On many coins, the mintmark touching one of the other elements would be interesting, but it is common for the mintmark to touch that particular leaf on Mercurys. Actually, when I first saw the one on the right, I thought it was the trumpet tail which, as far as I know, was not used in '44. Unfortunately, the little upward point on the upper serif suggests straight serif.
Sorry for delay. Thank you for feedbacks. Here's upclose on one coin with missing or over polish on bottom of S. Also another coin 1942 P, is it PMD or CUD?
First, welcome to the neighborhood, Slim! Can you start a new thread and post photos of your dime with a close-up of the mintmark? There is more than one style used for the SF mintmark. ~ Chris
