Two 0.0005 inch thick layers of pure zinc (based upon a density of 7.133 g/cm^3) would have a mass of 0.05164 grams. Is it a coincidence that 2.70 g of steel plus 0.05 g of zinc adds up to 2.75 g? That would explain both the 2.70 g number (e.g. in Yeoman's Guide Book) and 2.75 g in the U.S. Mint report.
