so I found this one today and was wondering if they're very hard to find it's the first one I have found from the San Francisco mint. Looks like there was a run of around 200 million on them. It looks like someone tried to coat it with something. Because I understand they were Zinc coated prior to leaving the mint to prevent corrosion! anyways I guess my question is there any value here, is it worth a 2x2 or just throw it in the jar with the rest of them? Thanks!
That is a steel wartime cent. That is one of those coins that speaks to history. The SanFran mint put out plenty of them so they aren't rare at all. But certainly speaks to a very important time and place in history. I would certainly adorn it with its very own 2X2.
Worth less than $1, but a fairly nice coin. I would probably keep it. The iron blanks used to press these were zinc plated.
Unfortunately, these were highly hoarded by people as they thought they would increase in value due to being only minted one year, but as such, they are plentiful and not worth too much over face value.
Looks like a keeper to me but they are very common. Nice find. Put in a 2 x 2 or a flip and tuck it away.
Seems to have been copper coated at one time, which if it was, brings the value down to face value. If it hasn't been plated, XF 43-S is worth about 50 cents.
Definitely a keeper!! If for no other reason it has a story to tell and you can share it with some kids one day!! Part of the greatest generation!!!
https://en.numista.com/ has a G listed at .32 and $1.07 at XF. Agree w/1stSgt22, "Definitely a keeper!!" Put it in that 2x2.
