Since the price of silver was down today, I checked with my dealer and he had taken in 25 Mercs; I bought them and this one was among them.

I like it! I have a collection of '40-S Mercs with various die cracks.

I don't have any Merc's yet... I don't have a ton of American coins yet... My collection is still growing and hopefully one day I can afford a gold coin

For your first gold coin I would advise the $1 gold liberty/princess head the lowest u.s gold denomination you will need to save around $200 but its well worth it.

Gotta disagree, I think a $5 or $10 is more impressive and has a lower premium.

Go for the $2.50 Indian Gold. They are lower priced and the incluse design is great.

    Here's a couple of the '40-S rim to wing die breaks I've acquired. 1940S.2.obv1.1k.JPG 1940S.obv13b (2).jpg

And here's an obverse die in 3 pieces. 1940S.5.obv.1k.JPG

Nice purchase if you got them cheap enough.

My theory is the San Francisco mint didn't receive enough dies for production that year.
I would think that die came out of service in pieces, and this is not the only obverse die that had cracks from rim to rim.
