Pulled this baddie out of a box of Nickels yesterday, and I was simply happy to get a silver coin. Interestingly, it was found on roll 25 to make my 25th silver coin of the year found CRH. It will probably be hard to tell because of considerable damage, but what do you guys think - is it a 43/2, or possibly a 43 DDO?
It definitely isn't a DDO (Doubled Eye), and it is very hard to tell from those photos if that is the base of the 2 peeking out from the lower curvature of the 3. Without better photos, I am at a standard 1943-P with no varieties.
Hopefully this captures the date better. Also, I didn't realize that the 1943 DDO was primarily the eye, but I will remember that for later.
I still can't tell from that photo, it is just too pixelated. The problem is that these are pretty rare and I have only encountered a few in circulated condition with this one being the lowest graded example. Despite being circulated, you can readily see both the diagonal of the 2 which points under the middle point of the 3, and the flat base of the 2 inside the lower curvature of the 3. Yours seems to have the diagonal, but I can't make out the base of the 2 and we should be able to see it. Can you see the base of the 2 with a 10X or 20X loupe?
I'll make sure to look at it under a loupe. I will do that tomorrow if I remember, and I'm hoping that it's the ultimate error. All I can do is pray until tomorrow.
