Why did this sell on eBay for that price? I thought the 1943 copper penny is worth like $50,000-80,000? New to coins so I don’t know.

    Because it's not real.

If it was real, it would be graded and in a holder from PCGS or NGC.

How do you know which ones real and which one isn’t? I didn’t even know pennies can be faked.

    Scams are everywhere on Ebay.

    A $100,000 coin for $500? FAKE

A genuine one was sold at the recent FUN auction for $240,000. Took a quick look at the eBay coin. It looks like a 1973 coin where an attempt was made to make the 7 look like a 4.

There's only around 26 known copper 1943 cents.
They are all documented and listed. Anything like this is bogus,
because if it were a new discovery it's a six figure coin.
There haven't been any new discoveries of this coin for many years. I am trying to find when the last one was discovered.
Listings like this on EBay are pointless, because it's an instant refund.
Item not as described. Counterfeit, etc. Is it really worth all the phone calls, e mails,
shipping costs back and forth for a non sale?
Do they think the buyer is going to be embarrassed at their stupidity and not ask for a refund? Do they think they can sell fake coins and not get in trouble? Suspended account, legal problems, etc.
It's never worth a little money to try and pull this ridiculous scam. People are idiots on both ends of this transaction.

Not necessarily. All 1943 copper cents were raw at one time.

My gut said that the coin in question was plated.

Here is a modern fake struck in copper.
