Nope----I mean if it is a fake its a fake--there isn't any reason to know why....the companies are in business to get rid of fakes so that people don't sell them as real---most of the time people don't want to know why its a fake.
It could be a cast copy---a die transfer copy---etc....to tell that you would need to get someone who study fakes and would know how each one is made and etc...and even then in the shape yours is in I doubt much could be told....since the weight is off and the one dealer said that its fake I would save the money and just keep it as fake---and then if you would ever get to go to a large show take it and show it to a grading company and ask what they think.

i,ve been following this thread and now that it,s drawning to a end, i would like to make a comment..i,ve been carving coins [ hobo nickels ] over ten years, a good engraver can make a 3 out of a 8 and not leave any tell- tell marks, a good engraver can even move metal on a coin..as to a coin looking old, a lot of you have seen my hobo nickels that have been aged out...[ps] i do not age my hobo nickels out to deceive someone, i mark and number all my hobo nickels very deep with my trademark...

    Bill,
Yes a good engraver can do what you say, but no engraver can make a hobo nickel with the artistry that you can. And someday I hope to have one of your hobo nickels you are by far the best out there.:thumb:

As Speedy said most companies will just send it back to you and charge you for the service anyway. I believe ICG will only charge $5.00 if they have to return it and PCI will slab it in their red slab with a notation if it is not genuine. Your best bet might be to start out with PCI at around $10.00 and you can submit it yourself without going through a dealer. At least it will be in an encasement for the ages.

    Hey John
When did PCI start to slab fake coins??...this is news to me.
My dealer sent them an error coin and it came back in a bag saying that it was fake---maybe because it was an odd shape they didn't slab it...

I could well be mistaken. My impression was they slabbed problem coins with a red label.

yes, they slab problem coins, cleaned, whizzed, etc. but not counterfeit.

I'll ask my dealer who is a big PCI fan if he knows anything about this---for years people have been asking for a company to slab fakes and just mark them but I haven't found one that would so far.

At least as long as they recognize the coins as counterfeits. It's when they don't that bothers me.
