Would that have caused the bubbling on the reverse? Personally I believe it is a counterfeit, but I hope it is real. As mentioned post the results when it gets returned. Best of luck!
I know it looks like bubbling from the pictures but those are actually concave instead of convex (they go inward) most likely from being in circulation or in those bags of the rusty hard steel pennies!
I don't think those are the cause of those marks... how many other coins have you seen with marks like that??? not many, if any... and all coins to this day still come in big bags. My guess is that this coin is a complete counterfeit. I can say with complete certainty that this piece is not a genuine 1943 copper.
Ive seen them on uncleaned coins before, usually its from getting stepped on or driven/biked over leaving indents from small gravel, dirt, etc.
Hey, don't all '43s have an extra "s" after "PLURIBUS", a horizontally squished "F" in "OF", a slanty-legged "M" in "AMERICA", and a casting bubble just a hair to the left of 6:00, between the wheat ear stalks? Give the OP a break guys, he obviously has a rarity.
I might also add that the original wheatback design used a font slanting what are normally vertical lines so yes all '43's do have a slanted leg in the "M" and what you see as an "air bubble" is concave not convex... its an indent. Lets try to look at pictures before we throw around insults.
Don't even entertain the fact that this coin is genuine. It is 100% fake... there is no question about that. There are literally thousand of fake '43's entering the U.S. every day courtesy of our Chinese friends, and most are much more realistic than the one you have. They are minted using laser cut dies and exact alloy planchets. So the bottom line... don't get your hopes up.
I agree, i think that the coin collecting community is suffering its biggest blow ever from these chinese counterfeiters. They love to fake everything ive ever collected, Guitars WW2 memorabilia, just everything you can think of. Very upsetting and yes ive seen my fair share of chinese fakes, i just hope they dont get to the point that being able to distinguish real from fake is a thing of the past. I mean now we have reports of more than 40 1943 copper cents authenticated by trustworthy TPG's... could the mint really have been dumb enough to leave that many copper blanks in the hopper?!? Oh well, im just going to send it in anyway. Ill keep you guys posted. Ill go to PCGS for this one, ill be expecting a body bag but hoping for the best (at least a "cannot verify authenticity") Thanks for everyones help with the acception of hontonai's uncalled for sarcasm (LOL). Please keep giving me opinions everyone, this is a good thread to learn alot.
The main reason why I would call it counterfeit is the abnormal color (but that might just come from cleaning) and the outrageous doubling. I've never seen such strong doubling and it doesn't even match the original letter's size (and possibly shape as well). Just IMHO... But send it in! That's what we all say to everyone else who has a "rarity" (no sarcasm intended)...and then they never get back to us on what happened. Oh, and welcome to CT!
Thanks! Im gonna put the final mark on this as fake but im going to send it in anyway, Ill get back to you guys!
