As to your question over the original coin in a NGC holder not having square edge well it does, just doesn't show as well as the 42 and 42 P proofs that are raw.

The Mint was heavy handed with die polishing for proofs in the 1936-1942 period; thus, sometimes the final details may be missing details as they have been polished away. So I wouldn't say that the "strike" is better of the majority of these coins.
