Ok, now I'm curious about your theory about it getting its dent prior to striking. Is the dent that same thickness as the edge of a nickel planchet? if so, maybe it got hit by the edge of another planchet before it entered the striking chamber. It could explain the weakness of the lettering inside the 'dent'. The dent does seem to have a curvature of the general diameter of a nickel.
Can the OP please do a comparison and maybe photo graph it with a nickel on edge placed over this dent?

if the dent was pre-strike, the bulge of metal at the bottom would have been flattened

A definite strike through. I think whatever that object was it obliterated the finer lines in the steps, caused the blurriness on the EL and pushed metal down towards the bottom but the strike rounded it all out.

If it was as suggested, it wouldn’t have that lump at the base of the indentation.
