I was looking through a bag of wheat pennies and this coin looked interesting. The date has what appears to be a slanted "1" between the 9 and 4. What is this? PMD? penny.png

It looks like a Die chip or Die break in between the date

here are example of the two different types I have

    die chip

I looked up "penny die chip in date" on Google Images and the sixth image was your 1950-D penny you posted here and on coincommunity.com. I thought that was funny:)

I have to agree with Larry.

We need a netter picture (close up) of the date

My camera can't go any more close up than that without the picture being fuzzy.

The OP's first photo is damage between the date.
Not a die chip or any error.

I have the same die crack on reverse. But mine is between the words cent and united states. Planchet must have been rotated just a little from yours. Your the first person I've seen that has talked about this error. I can't find any info on this 1940 d penny error.

It looks like a chip to me between the 9 and 4. Similar to a BIE in LIBERTY where the space in between the letters gives way some.

Don't want to disagree with Fred, but it does look like a die chip to me...
