    Metal detecting my home was built in1889 and I find all sorts of things can you tell me what's going on with a nickel I got in change I see this on a lot of coins i have its on the bottom of the reverse in United States of America

    I'm not a Jefferson nickel expert by any means. But if your looking at the "line" in the coin from N in United to the M in America it appears to be PMD (post mint damage). The way all the letters are effected as if you ran a plow through them really doesn't indicate any kind of mint error to me. Just looks like that old nickel has had a rough life! But thats just the way i see it.
