1940 penny mintmark

    Also on the reverse what is that on the underside of the middle horizontal bar in the “E” in “CENT”?

    the S mint mark look's like it took a hit form something a long time ago so it looks a little off now

    Truly?? I considered that but it’s so odd looking and so small that I finally dismissed that option. But I’m usually wrong

    if you look at your pic up close you can see that the s took a hit to the crossbar of the s and lower serif/curve diagonally {/}

    Just look at your pictures.
    Clearly the "S" took a swipe, for example from a coin rolling machine.
    The "0" from 1940 has hits on its edges too and a few swipes over the lower part of the 0.

    It is an unfortunate hit at the MM. Not really sure about the other anomaly at the middle leg of the E in Cent. Might be a die chip, but again, not really sure.
