So I get this nice BU roll of 1948-S Lincoln Cents. Not an original bank wrapped roll but opened. All coins in nice BU except this one. Hopefully the pictures are good enough but the IB in Liberty is missing and the 8 in the date. Also some outer letters faint in the ends of "In God We Trust". On the reverse letters weak in E Pluribus Unum. Any idea what happened here. Post mint damage or cleaned. Thanks in advance.
Not struck thru a Capped Die. Struck thru grease or other machinery oil. Very common occurrence like that.
I'm leaning toward being caused by a grease-filled die, but it could be a weak strike. I'm not 100% positive. Perhaps a Lincoln specialist will chime in. Chris One just did!
The weakness or missing features are caused by a grease filled Die. Actually it is a fairly common occurrence.
Thanks guys. Appreciate the answers. Just wanted to make sure. Kinda weird getting 49 BU Red 1948-S Lincoln Cents with this one also in the roll. Color looks kinda off also. Much lighter which kinda looks like a cleaning.
Some is weak die strike while some is grease filled. The O in One on the reverse is usually the first to start exhibiting weakness due to die wear. Either way it's a very common occurance.
