The 1939 Doubled Die Reverse Variety 1 is often referred to simply as the Doubled MONTICELLO Jefferson Nickel. There is dramatic doubling on both the word MONTICELLO and FIVE CENTS which can be seen with the naked eye and this variety is undoubtedly the most popular of the entire series. In my opinion, no serious Jefferson Nickel collection can be complete without the addition of this coin. While scarce in mint state, a small number of uncirculated rolls were discovered in the late 1980's. I present the Doubled MONTICELLO Jefferson Nickel of the Atlantic City Set of Jefferson Nickels:

The coin is essentially untoned and has shimmering luster over bright silvery surfaces. Some minor abrasions are scattered across Jefferson's portrait and a significant mark is found on the incomplete steps of Monticello which rate 5-3-3-4 by the quarter step method.

Formerly FS-022, the new Fivaz-Stanton designation is FS-801. The doubling is bold and clear whereas variety 2 is less pronounced. Both varieties only exist on the Reverse of 1940 dies. Please note that the overall strike of the coin is excellent as well. The windows and doors are all complete and there is only the slighest blending of the columns and roof. A gem example without full steps has a current population of 63/45 and the PCGS Price Guide is $1,100.

Comments about the coin and photographs are welcome!
