I have posted photos of 10 different 1939-D Jefferson Nickels. The first four are reverse of 38 while the last 6 are reverse of 40. The purpose of this thread is to find out which 1939-D reigns supreme in a winner take all Battle Royale.

Rules: Please vote for your two favorite coins. Whichever coin receives the most votes after 7 days will be the winner. You may change your votes until the conclusion of the poll.

Grades: Nine of the 10 contestants have been graded. I will not be divulging the grades of the coins until after the contest is over. If you happen to know the grade of a particular coin from experience on the forum, please don't out the grade to others who don't know. Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

Price: I will also be divulging my purchase price of each coin at the conclusion of the contest. Feel free to tell me what you think the purchased price was of your two favorite coins in the comments section. Mad props to whomever comes closest.

It was hard to choose- each one looks great.
However, I chose No. 4 and No. 6.
On the 4th one, there is both nice toning, and a nice sheen, while the 6th one looks great with clean surfaces and luster.

    My guess: No. 4- $28, No. 6- $68

I voted for #1 and #6 - I have no idea on the prices - been so long since I've purchased a Jefferson.

The most outstanding one to me is coin #6. I'd like coin #10 the best except the obverse doesn't have enough spots. What did you name that coin #10, Spot? :)

#10 actually has really nice step detail, not a total dog.

#1 and #4 for me. Both are well struck EDS examples.

Definitely. I didn't mean to be so hard on it. ;)

Too many spots on #10 for me. I liked #1 & #6. It just happened that one was white and one was toned. First I looked for a mark/blemish free coin and then I went back and looked at the steps. Those are the two that stood out for me. I don't have the slightest idea what any of them would be worth. Let's just say they're probably worth what Paul paid for them.:hilarious:;)

    @Lehigh96 - Paul, the percentages don't jive.

They do, everyone gets two votes so the total percentage is 200% as opposed to 100%.

I figured so, but I just wanted to be sure.

I didn't vote as I have very little experience with early Jeffersons. I'd be proud to own any of them, though.

There is no right or wrong answer on this thread, just choose the two you like the best and cast your votes, please.

    You made this tough.

    2 choices... ehhh

#1 - great eye appeal with pastel toning. 66

#2 - great eye appeal with neon toning. 66

#3 - blazing luster with a great strike. Nice steps but just short of FS. 67

#4 - great eye appeal with neon toning. Think the mark on the face keeps it from 66. Steps look nice. 65+FS

    #5 - 66

    #6 - blast white with blazing luster - 67

#7 - weak strike, average luster, but great surfaces - 66

#8 - ditto #7 with less strike but some nice toning - 65

#9 - nice orange toning that makes the legends jump off the coin. Probably blazing luster - 67

#10 - just can’t get past the spots. Probably great luster - 65

Picked #4 for eye appeal, toning, and strike.

Picked #9 for eye appeal and luster.

If I had a third choice it would have been #2 for eye appeal and toning.

    #4 - I guess $65
    #9 - I guess $55

#6 was my first choice ...it looked to have the most luster and cleanest surfaces

#2 was my second choice ...it looked like the best of the toners (and if I were picking two, I’d like one blast white and one toned)

There are fewer equations than unknowns. No closed form solution can be established.

voted #1 and #2 for eye appeal, incredible toning on both. #1 is my favorite with a grade of 65 and a price range of $85 to a $100, #2 I am guessing 64 because of small chatter on cheek and small hit on reverse with a cost of $50. Probably under on grade and cost but doing this on cell phone so cannot really appreciate how beautiful these coins really are. They both speak to me and would be bought if seen at a show.
