Hey all I scored on a pretty nice 38-D looks high AU maybe low MS haven’t had enough to know the grades very well yet. I do have these black spots that are in different spots around the obverse and reverse. I know acetone is good for organic material but don’t want to waste the time or chance anything if I don’t have to. Almost looks like black paint or something I have seen this on other silver coins maybe it’s just toning spots? Any recommendations on what to do or just leave it alone would be greatly appreciated. I also got this for 275$ shipped and was wondering if it would be pointless in getting it graded as I have always sent the NGC in the last to get the cheapest membership it’ll be about 90$ shipped to get this graded and not sure if this is also worth it or not. Also there’s a decent gash on the obverse rim on the right side that may drop it fairly good as well sadly.. Like I said not well at grading these walkers comfortably yet. Thank you!

Hey man! What have you tried? Have you tried Acetone? I think their called Carbon Spots. Just google it. That's what is recommended to not harm the coin. It may just lighten the color but not remove them altogether. Peace man !:)

    Vertigo Did someone say bust?

Yes acetone won't hurt anything. But I hope that isn't corrosion.

Acetone is usually a good first step, though I have doubts about an acetone bath removing the black spots.
I'm having difficulty picking up luster from your photos. You have the coin in hand, is there any luster remaining?
I'm not sure if grading is worth while for this coin. IMO the coins overall condition, the price that was paid, and the grading costs would far exceed the coins current value.
Perhaps a better evaluation can be made after a careful acetone bath and clarification about remaining luster.

just my non-professional opinion, so take it for a grain of salt. it doesn't look like "carbon spots" which are contaminant flecks left on coins that cause dark toning.

looks like tar or crayon flecks, or something like that, maybe a smokers cough, or a black mold or fungus even from poor storage at some point. I'd give it an acetone bath, it won't impair the luster and might just remove whatever it is.
