there seems to be a Micro D off to the left. Is this common? is this considered a true DD? Thanks for any assistance
https://www.ngccoin.com/coin-varieties/nickels/buffalo-nickels-vscid-4/ It does look like an FS502 to me but not sure if it's a "true" DD or rather mechanical doubling... I am not really into DDOs/DDRs but I hope the link helps.
I agree, it looks like it could be the FS 502 for 1938d. Any more photos of it so we can tell if it is flat or more raised. https://www.ngccoin.com/coin-varieties/buffalo-nickels/1938-d-d-buffalo-5c-fs-502-1557/
That is an 1938 D WRPM -002 repunched D west and a nice one at that. Can you post both the obv,and rev, for a grade analysis ? I have several 38 D rpm's There are quite a few and including a D/S DD/S & DDD/S
This is not "doubling" as in a doubled die, but "repunching" (RPM - Re-Punched Mintmark) and would properly be writen as "D/D" (meaning D over D).
Wexler,Pope ,Flynn,Fivaz,Stanton, of the Cherry Pickers Guide all list the 1938 D/D DD/S & the DDD/S as stated in my post. But I guess you are more of an Authority? And you were the author of what reference book on Buffalo nickels?
I am the only one who posted after you, and nothing I said was directed at nor even remotely countered/disputed anything you said, Paddy, so why the tirade?
Paddy and Books are both correct.. this is not a Doubled Die, it is a Nice example of an RPM. The Micro D you are seeing is probably a stain on the coin.
