For me it doesn't matter.. If I think it is a key date I will check first then decide to clean my detected coins.
I wipe it off yes found 5 all together. 2 1910 1919 d, 1946 1937 S wrapped in sumthing leather looked liked found a Indian stone there too.
Coins that have been in the ground for a long time have dirt buried in the details that rinsing won't get entirely out so even a soft toothbrush will loosen that ground in dirt and scrape it around thus causing scratches. The ginger ale method eliminates that damage and works swell. I was a disbeliever too until I tried it.
BTW. After taking the coin out of the ginger ale rinse it well then pat dry. I have coins that I did this to years ago and they still look great with no telltale signs of ever being cleaned.
I've been collecting coins for 55yrs and certainly would not recommend doing something that doesn't work or damages coins.
