If my memory serves me . . . not all 1936 Proof coins were Brilliant Proofs. After the first 1936 Proof coins in Matte finish (or, if not Matte, some other dull finish) were not well-received the Mint changed to making all Proof coins Brilliant Proofs. So some percentage of 1936 Proof coins are not Brilliant Proofs.

I believe that's true Hobo from what I saw on heritage, I should have posted a 36, but I don't think any of them looked like the original coin.

Thanks for jumping in with that HOBO. Now we have to let postalx, get a local Dealers opinion. I think it's going to be a tad better than some of the " quick judgements".

    Good luck Postalx.

The obvious difference is that the fields are 'merely' shiny, not mirror-like. And yes, the rims do exhibit some rounding...:desk: Fred
The attached photos are all PR-66's, the PR-67 is 'toned' at the edge

Like GD (Doug), I do not think this coin is a Proof. It does not have the flat rims and strong strike of a Proof. The reason I posted above about some 1936 Proof coins not being Brilliant Proof is that a 1936 coin does not have to be shiny (i.e., Brilliant) to be Proof.

But it does have to have full rounded rims?

What makes you think it doesn't have mirror fields. Look at his last picture. It really shows off the reflectivity of the coin. I'm sorry, but you may be eating your hat soon.

so the only detraction from a proof designation in regards to this coin, is the lack thereof full rounded rims?

    Rounded rims = Business Strike

    Flat rims = Proof

My local guy, who, as it turns out, is a retired PCGS grader who opened up his own shop, decreed it "polished" and circulated. Going back tomorrow. Thanks, everyone for your help on this.

I guess the tip-off should have been the $154.33 closing bid!

    Fred

Does this mean we don't get to watch Doug eat his hat?

Darn nice strike , it could be an impared proof but unlikely unless they polished the rims rounded .

Doesn't look like your typical "run of the mill" polish job.
