I think we can all agree on that your coin is worn. A worn or circulated coin will have charcteristics that an unc wont. For instance, on a well circuated coin... I would say XF and lower, mint luster diminishes greatly. On your coins it goes from a shinny coin to a very dull coin. It just doesn't seem to move the light like a good unc would. I have seen some nice XF coins that still had traces of luster and those are unique coins to find.

Surpisingly, your coin is very smooth and I was not able to see any marks on it which is good. The wear appears to be very even and flat.... did you notice that. No one area has any greater wear than another. Which makes me wonder if this was maybe your granddads pocket piece? That was very common and still is..... that people will keep a special coin in a seperate pocket and touch it for luck or tradition or anything you can thing of.

Maybe some other members can make comments on what they are seeing.

I will try to do some research for you this weekend on thsi coin. I believe it was veru poorly struck coin and finding a nice example is the key. Hopefully others will chime in and give their expert opinion.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I don't think he kept it in his pocket from what I can remember but who knows who had the coin before him. He was born in 1918 and started collectingg in the 40's from what I can tell.

I'll probably go with rzage's suggestion on using an after-market slab instead of getting it graded/slabbed. I won't get to that until I get thru the entire collection tho.

    Thanks again!
