Grrr....I bought a coin just like that, thinking it was an improperly mixed alloy. It came back from NGC as "improperly cleaned."
He's the best grader on the Forum, once a consensus has been reached or the grade posted. The only thing I an think of is they chose to penalize the coin for the coloration, because on technical merit it's multiple grades above that. And in that case, it's pure subjective conjecture on their part, conjecture I wholeheartedly disagree with. My opinion is actually a bit different, but those are the words which won't get me banned.
One of a kind! He is. I am glad you said subjective, because it doesn't show any signs of wear, that is purely the strike, sorry that they don't agree with me though.
I'm fairly surprised. MS 60 is a grade that isn't handed out too often. I would have thought NGC might go 62 to punish the woodie, but 60 is quite odd. Still, you have a nice coin and I'd be happy with it regardless of the holder.
That was such an EDUCATIONAL & INFORMATIONAL post that i marked it as BEST ANSWER !!! Brilliant !!! You sir, are in the running for numismatist of the year !! I wonder how many more members hafta to follow suit and mark as best answer for it to get endorsed as answered? Whos w me??
Sorry im late to the party !! I wouldnt have given it an ms60, but if there was a gun to my head i would have gone 58 most likely. Very nice and unusual coin, the label woodie just seems wrong for a buffalo in general. I am leaning towards maybe calling these brendal (sp?) OR tiger striped.
I here ya, this one has a lot more luster though. First time in his shop, Bargain bin. What looked like a big scratch in the original flip? Turned out to be a die crack. From forehead to lapel.
