I'm not sure this is the appropriate forum, but being .999 silver, I figured it was as good as any. I picked this up today and was hoping to tap the knowledge of this site. It weighs 4.77 Troy oz's and is stamped .999 fine silver. Anybody have any info?
Your first photo indicates that this medal is the seventh in the series. So, we do know that there are at least six others, if not more. Have you researched "Society of Medallists"? Medallic Art Co. began in NY in 1903 and is the oldest private mint in the US. It has moved several times and is now owned by Northwest Territorial Mint. Their reputation for producing the highest quality medals is well-known. I have several of their silver and bronze medals from the 60's when they were still located in NY. Chris
I really enjoy these huge medals, especially the silver ones. I'm slightly sad about every one I've let go through the years. Not so much a fan of the cherub side, so I'd definitely display the cicada side. Here is an online SELLER with what looks like the bronze medal pictured and prices for both bronze ($80) and silver ($450.) He has all 129 issues pictured/listed, as well as a book to reference for more information. Issue #7 1933 by Carl Paul Jennewein: GLORIA - Cherub / FAMA - Cicada, $80. Silver, $450. Here is an antiques DEALER with a link to the bronze version and a "realized price" of $90. Says "Est 200-400." Your design is the second from the top. I'd be overjoyed to find one of these again now...for around silver price
I've never seen Society of Medalists medals sell for around the price of silver. From my understanding the Medalic Art Co would make medals for customers while the SoM released medals purely for the sake of the art.
