Picked this up for a song on Ebay (under $10). I think it's a DDO. Check the images. Couldn't get a good pic of the nostril doubling, but the ear especially seems to match the DDO specs. If the man who posted before me says it is, it can't be anything but a DD. I'm not sure I've ever seen him say anything besides MD! :-D
How did it happen? Are there superimposed portraits on the die, like superimposed letters or dates on other DDOs? Is this one portrait on top of another on this die? I think that's what you're saying. You can tell me, I won't let anyone know, lol.
It happened the same way as the famous 1955 doubled die, and any other one. The die was impressed twice, as is/was normal, and there was movement between the two impressions.
