This is exactly why the 1950 D Jefferson nickel, despite technically being the rarest of the entire issue, can still be had for around $20 even in uncirculated condition. Despite it technically being rare (well rare-EST, more than 2 million were minted), everyone knew it was going to be rare, so they saved a bunch and now it's not hard at all to find ms/au examples of it. (See the Roosevelt dimes; none of them were really rare at all. Technically the rarest ever issued for general circulation is the 1955, but they still minted 12 million of those. Strictly speaking the rarest one is the 1950 proof.)

So 1931 S Lincoln cent... yeah surprised it's not faked more often than it is; you see a lot of fake 1914-Ds and 1909-S VDBs out there, but these are rarities well known even to a lot of people that don't know a lot about coins. The 1931-S is actually rarer than the 1914-D technically but because so many collectors knew it was going to be rare, it was saved in large quantities, thus is a lot easier to find these days. Some might be faked but this coin isn't as "famous" as the 1914-D so less people bother I guess. This is the second-rarest Lincoln cent, only the 1909-S VDSB is rarer (*which is also the only other issue to have a mintage of less than a million), but it's not at all that hard to find.

(*among known mintages intended for general circulation; some varieties may be rarer, but official mintage figures for them don't exist; and many proof issues are rarer, but obviously not meant for circulation. Strictly speaking the rarest Lincoln cent with a known official mintage figure is the 1916 matte proof, only about 1000 of them were minted.)
