It wouldnt surprise me if this huge jump in price from RB to RD led (leads) many to dip toned examples making them "artificially red" and then selling for a huge profit. I wonder if this is why populations of (more original) mint state BN's and RB's are so much smaller.
Apparently dipping wasn't very successful from that era. Including recerts, there are only about 100 each of the 23 - 27 S's at PCGS in full red.
