I hit the jackpot this morning on eBay. This jewel was only $20.00. Couple Questions: #1: One thing I've noticed in examining fakes is the odd 'raised area' that is near the rims. On this example you can see it through the R, T, and Y in 'LIBERTY'. Does anyone know what part of the process causes this? #2: Another thing I've noticed is the weird pock marked surface - is this a characteristic of casting? Also, I've no idea what is going on with the 'O' on the reverse 'ONE'. The seller doesn't have these listed as fakes so I sent a PM asking that these be labeled as fakes. It will be interesting to see if I get back gratitude or snark. I'm betting on snark. I'm thinking about sitting down and sketching out a Peace Dollar (pencil and paper) just to get really familiar with how they look. The devil is in the details.
I know fakes can be had cheaper; however, I don't want to give my credit card number to a site that deals in fakes. This transaction was handled through Pay Pal and eBay - for the little I spend on these things the extra cost is worth it to me.
well. 1928 P are expensive if you read this https://www.ngccoin.com/news/article/3082/Counterfeit/ but I think the O in ONE on the reverse is just wrong placement - matter of fact the "ONE DOLLAR" is shifted a bit to far left by comparison but I don't know if that could be a different die thing. "OF" is wrong it just doesn't look right to me ... but I'm no Peace Dollar or fake expert. now that I look at it .. I could write a list of things where I would have passed on it. I have been looking at 1928 P Peace Dollars though. I think I'm only going to buy Raw from APMEX for peace dollars for peace of mind authenticity ... see the pun there ?? eh, eh? never mind ...
You can still get your money back, and keep the fake. But I wouldn't do that, or buy what I thought was fake originally, as it just enriches the seller and gives them encouragement to continue.
As it turns out, fakes are bucking the market trend and going up in value. "Yes, I retired early by investing in fake coins. I look down on people who stack silver or invest in real coins." ^--- BTW, if you think that is a joke I've one word for you: Bitcoins.
Yup, I invested in Bitcoins too before they surged above 2500 back in the fall. Also in LiteCoin and Ethereum.
ebay seller now has a "batch" of 10 available for $15 ... looks like he selling more and more and pushing for more and more profit.
It is definitely a fake. But I admire your willingness to take a chance. Sometimes, nothing ventured is nothing gained? No biggie.
Another purchase: (1928, 1934-S) These are for my holed and lowball collection. And yes, I know they're garbage. I like them though.
