As some of you know I like "sleeper" coins. So what do you all think of the 1927-D Standing Liberty Quarter? A highly popular series and this one has less than one million minted. Only ones with lower mintages are the 1916 and 1927-S. Now I know that the pre-1925 design was notorious for the date wearing off. Still, third lowest mintage and VERY little respect. Case in point here. Today my boss bought a decent set of quarters. Barbers, Standing Liberties and Washingtons. He knows I like the 27S SLQ. Offered it to me for $30. A G4 coin that I feel was cleaned. Turned it down as I have about 25 already and stopped buying them in the $10-12 range. So I inquired about the 27-D. I have but a few of those. The price was right so I bought it. Here's the coin in question. http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x275/clembo1872/scan0018-1.jpg http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x275/clembo1872/scan0019-4.jpg Nothing fantastic but the date is full, the mintmark is strong and it looks original. Comsidering melt is at about $3 I happily dropped $5 for it. I figure this may be my next "sleeper". If I can nail these as they come in I will. I have at least 25 27-S now and would gladly sell them at $20-25 each in order to trade up to a higher end (XF or better) coin. Would probably have to throw in some cash as well but it would be worth it as I have $250 tops into my G-VG coins. Does the same possiblility work with the 27D? Don't really thinks so looking at the numbers but if one plays ones cards right there is the potential to gain some nice examples down the road by buying cheap now. Thoughts? clembo
