In 1925 : Benito Mussolini announced his own dictatorial powers over Italy. Nellie Ross and Ma Ferguson became the first female governors in the US, of Wyoming and Texas, respectively. The Great Gatsby was published...so was Mein Kampf John Scopes was arrested in Tennessee for teaching Evolution Mount Rushmore was dedicated You could buy a Thompson submachine gun for $175....from Sears. Your coin was minted. ================== One other thing from 1925.... A baby, Lawrence Peter, was born on May 12th in an Italian neighborhood of St. Louis, MO called "The Hill". His father, Pietro, and mother, Paolina, were both Italian immigrants, arriving at Ellis Island in 1909. Larry made several friends growing up, including the neighbor boy across the street, Joe, and another young man just a few houses away, young Jack. While attending South Side Catholic High School (now known as St Mary's), Joe and Larry spent most of their time hounding the local American Legion team to let them play a little baseball after (or frequently while they should have been in) school. They were pretty good too. In fact, the local pro team, the St Louis Cardinals, thought Joe Garagiola was a pretty decent prospect, and signed him for a $500 bonus. In fact, their old pal Jack Buck even called a few of Joe's games. :) They all kinda missed the boat on Larry though. The president of the Cards, Branch Rickey, had hoped to "hide" Larry, and sign him later when he took over the Dodgers. It wasn't to be, though... The Yankees wound up offering Lawrence Peter "Yogi" Berra a $500 bonus of their own. =================
