    I see what you are seeing. It's not an error. The coin is toning, it's circulated, has a small amount of dirt on the surface and the faint remains of a fingerprint. All this combined gives the appearance of a faintly raised number 3, 2 or an 8. Not part of the minting process.

    Selective toning. This dollar was taped to something at one time and had something laying on it that had printing on it. Whatever was lying on it caused the yellowish toning, but the printing protected the coin from toning leaving untoned or lesser toned areas in the shape of the lettering. This can often be found on coins that have been left in Whitman folders undisturbed for many year. The page that had the paper end flyer folded over it will show the printing from the page "reverse toned" on the coins.
