Keep us posted after it is re-submitted. It will be a memorable thread to bring closure to. Good Luck.
trust me out of all coins gold is what i started on and know the best. i would show you one of mine that was sent into ngc and came back as an authentic because of the dings but its pointless to argue you are not going to understand. thats what i stay out of things like this. i was only trying to get you to get some better pictures for when you sell it, but you couldn't quite understand that... its one of these 4 things going on here.. 1. it was over graded 2. the scan you have does not represent the coin right. 3. fake slab with either fake coin or low grade coin 4. tampered slab i am banking on #1 and/or #2. well, we already know the scans are not that great. an ms64 may have SOME scratches, but the way it was scanned and the way you are talking, make it sound hammered real bad. that is really the bottom line as far as that goes. now if it checks out, from ngc. thats good, for you that they let one slip by. you may have some people passing it over because of the marks though. good luck, i hope you don't have to spend money or some time when all you had to do was spend 5 minutes getting a decent picture. edit: i am not trashing the coin. that is my favorite coin, even in AG. i just didn't want people to pass it over when bidding because of the grade and the condition the scans make it look in. its not in BAD condition or even close. its actually in mint state condition, so to speak.
what lol? and the blue dog has a dress-- that is how relevant, your post is to this thread... actually if you must know, we did not have lockers at our school, because of drugs and weapons. and i hardly had problems in school. i could point out, that i was a 5 star football recruit, committed to pitt, but had offers from schools like usc, Miami, Florida, i ended up blowing out my knee. but still get to keep my scholarship. so yea, hardly. would you like to see my profile on rivals.com? it has my picture and i don't look different from when it was taken, i could hold a sign saying "steven mack is an idiot", so you know the profile is me ???? i guess i feel bad for you. the few dollars this coin is worth must really mean a lot. i should start the "mack family education foundation"(wow, that has a nice ring to it). now i question if the coin is even real. you are not a smart person. wouldn't surprise me if someone in your family was ripped off, usually the apple don't fall to far from the family tree... i am not that lame to call out someone on an internet forum, so i will leave it at that.
I'm not an expert by no means I just think there are a few too many dings on the coin. The coin may come back in a new holder with no scratches and you can get better scans for 25 bucks worst case you get a new MS-64 coin and are only out 25 bucks. If it really bothers you about the 25 dollars and it comes back MS-64 I'll send you a few silver dimes and war nickels to help you start a collection postage included. Tim
Thanks for proving my point there Panda. But as amusing as this has been, I'm done. The very few knowledgable people that responded gave me what I needed a long time ago. The rest... well, you're not really doing anyone any good by spouting your amateur opinions at a rookie in hopes that you come off as more than a rookie. If you don't know what you're talking about, then perhaps just don't? It must get very frustrating to the people here that do. I find it amazing how many of you just feel you have to know more than the expert ladies and gentleman that rank coins for a living at the various numismatics organizations. Anyway. Boring now. Where's the end subscription button...
There is a saying that I have heard many times around here, "buy the coin, not the slab", I took it to mean that it is possible that a tpg could make a misstake, so do not buy based on what the slab says, but look at the coin and make your decision based on the coin itself. Then there is another saying and that is that you cannot properly judge coins by a photo, since photos can be artfully manipulated to hide defects, or as I suspect regarding the 1923-st gaudens that the photos show and highlight the defects, which probably do not show up quite so much with the actual coin in hand. The numismedia Fair market value lists the coin as being 2300, I have found them to be a little high maybe 10 percent, I have also heard that there is a dealer market for unseen slabbed coins but I do not have access to that list, perhaps a dealer who reads this could let you know what that listed value would be? If it were mine and I was thinking of selling, I would want to first talk to a dealer that is a member of the ANA, I think there is a list on their website of affilliated dealers, and I would bring it to him so he could look at it in person and give you a better idea of wether the coin should be left as is, in the present slab, or if it should be resubmitted on the chance that the coin was overgraded, whereby you would receive a coin that is more true to the grade, and also one that would be a better sell. All the best. BTW Mack is a very famous name in these parts, one of the earliest settlers was a Stephen Mack, any of your family hail from northern Illinois?
IMO scans never flatter a coin. That said, that coin is definitely jacked up! Goes back to the saying, reiterated - buy the coin not the slab! Snicker... This whole discussion reminds me of one of my favorite movies, Tommy Boy:
If I offended you I want to apologize. I am sorry and just want you to know a coin is what a coin is and you have to go with that. The reason I am a member here is these guys are honest to a fault. It is super hard to grade a coin from a picture and a scan makes it worst. I believe you when you say the coin looks better in hand. I am going off what I see here and it is hard to judge if the scratches and gouges are on the slab or coin. If you want to sell it ask someone to take some really good pictures of it. I want you to get Max money for the coin and the scan you posted is not going to get you there. The thing about selling a coin is give it the best picture you can if the coin looks MS-69 in a picture the higher the price it it looks MS-60 the lower get a high quality Picture. Again if I offended you I apologize. Tim
