Quite frankly, I can't see any evidence of cleaning at all, and I blew these pics up looking for it, because, like I said, I really love this coin. But, even in the worst case scenario, if PCGS "blew it," I'd have paid "$36 for this in a heartbeat! What still bothers me, though, is why the seller, who had the principal stake in the coin, would represent it as "cleaned." That just doesn't add up, it's like a thousand dollar self-inflicted wound, unless he knew something...
I was not sure, but it just looked to me like someone had cleaned or recolored (most likely) this coin. My local dealer (I believe to be an expert) THOUGHT it was original, but he also thought that it was AU. Not that it really makes any difference, but I got my wires crossed for the price. $36 was a different 23-S. This one was $24.99 plus $5.30 S&H. Also got a 1916-D unc. from him for ~$25 - both "on sale". I just checked. He is dealing in all certified moderns now. Maybe he really did not know what he was doing.
Insane That was one smoking profit margin!! Someday I hope to get one and not have to fork out a grand. I am jealous!
