I'm just wondering what would cause that awful damage? :yack:

If it wasn't damaged that was a good coin.

IMO it's worth keeping as a space filler until you can get an undamaged example. It's a darn shame about the damage.

Well, to me, it looks like you have a 1922D weak reverse, which, even in a G to VG condition, you could probably get $15-20, if it didn't have that damage.

In 1922 there were a little over 7.1 million coins produced (D mint, which totaled of 4 basic varieties: weak reverse, weak D, no-D strong rev,. & no-D weak reverse).

    In 1921, a little over 54.4 million coins were produced (P & S mints).
    In 1923, a little over 83.4 million coins were produced (P & S mints).

So, the relatively miniscule number of 1922 cents adds to their collectability. Yours, because of the severity of the damage, may still be worth a buck or two to someone who didn't want to spend the money on a problem free coin & just wanted to fill a hole. But if it were me, I'd call it a keeper.

Agree with $1 max because of damage.
    Otherwise $10- $15.

I sold one of these in G or maybe VG on eBay for $13 shipped. It is a better date, not a key date, so that condition kills things.

That gash cost that coin any chance of having any value.
