Just received the coin. These are the best pics I could get. Doesn't look like the ebay photos but more in line with what I thought it should look like. Kind of dull finish that appears typical for Peace Dollars. What do you think? Does it look cleaned? I'm hoping it's not but will ask my local coin shop for their opinion this weekend.
See pics of actual coin. In hand it looks much more like the one you posted rather than what the ebay pics showed. More frosty than bright. Will ask my local coin dealer for his opinion this week.
Here is cropped version of @KevinS' Peace Dollar purchase. I would grade it MS-63+ with a better than average strike.
While I am not a fan of toning, why would the sellers pics be so overexposed as to not show the toning and the true appearance of the coin? I stopped buying on EBay many years ago when I received (an inexpensive) Philippines note with incredibly deceptive photos.
Let us know what the dealer says. Knowing who the seller is I'm not very confident in a straight grade. How does the edge and rim at TY look in hand where that flat area shows evidence of filing in your original image?
There is one problem with going to dealers for an opinion about a coin they did not sell to you. Dealers want to sell you coins. Some of them are not interested in giving free advice if there is nothing in it for them. Quite often when a person asked me to let them show a prospective purchase to another dealer at a show, the verdict was usually thumbs down. What made it really tough was when a collector put a coin in front of me for an opinion when the dealer had the table next to me. That could be a no-win situation. I would establish a good relationship with your local dealer before you go to him for advice, especially on a regular basis.
Above average strike, has that going for it anyway. Hard to say anything more definite than that from pictures, but nothing really questionable jumps out imho.
My Local Coin Dealer was impressed with the strong strike as well. Couldn't tell if it was dipped but thought it may have been as he said he saw a "break" in the toning. He said definitely uncirculated and threw out an MS-60 opinion. He said based on what I paid for it, I couldn't go wrong. Personally think the grade is much higher that that after looking at many PCGS/NGC graded ones online. Either way, I'm going to keep it for the strong strike and eye appeal.
Sorry, but no. Note the marks in front of the face and the neck and cheek just in back of the mouth. An MS-66 is almost perfect. You really have to hunt to find a defect. For this issue, MS-67 is as good as it gets. The 68, 69 and 70 grades are off the table. An MS-66 usually sells for $6,000 or more.
Yeah, I overlooked that. Happens to me all the time with beautiful fillies, it's my hormones, the veterinarians say.
