no where near mint state is right... its about a very fine to Xf. not even au... I don't see a spot of luster.
Here's an XF-45 from Heritage: http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=210035&Lot_No=28426#photo
my friend talked about "coin dipping" don't know what it is but he said would bring luster back? what do you guys think?
I think your friend doesn't know what he is talking about. Luster, once it is gone can NOT be restored. The dip he is talking about can remove tarnish, but if done on a coin that has circulated and had the luster worn away results in a coin with a dull grey look and a very unnatural appearance. I would NOT dip this coin.
The Peace dollar is circulated and you paid pretty close to full retail on the coin. Dipping it would destroy a bit of the value of the coin and would never restore luster.
so if the 21 (pictures in MY above posting (imageshack) ) is only vf maybe xf is it worth paying $28 to grade?>
It is my opinion that at a cost of $28 to certify the coin the cost is far too great with respect to any realistic increase in value or liquidity gained from certification. These 1921 Peace dollars are fairly common even though they are considered "key" by many folks and you do not need certification to sell them. I would keep it raw unless you want to be deeper into the coin financially.
Thanks. I also have a 1799 dollar. I was told by a dealer it would rate vf-xf. My question is; if i send it into pcgs are they going to go into detailed with the grade? From what i know there were several different strikes with these coins. I also have seen coins only and pcgs only put "genuine" on it. I'm not a member yet but i am thinking of joining
To add (to what Tom has stated) if the coin has been improperly cleaned at some point, (Chris thought he saw hairlines [post # 17]) you'll only get a details grade. Gotta ask yourself....are ya feelin' lucky? :smile
i think i'll hold onto it raw. Put it in a cardboard holder. Now can anyone give me good insight on my above question? Thanks
The 1799 dollar needs to be certified to maximize resale value. If it has been previously cleaned or abused there is still a chance that it will make it into a problem-free holder since PCGS and NGC give some leeway to these early Federal coins. However, there is also the chance that it will end up in a "Genuine" holder without a grade if the abuse is too much in the eyes of the graders. Images would help.
