The RAW Halves were bought from a man I've know since I was in the Army in the 3rd Brigade,82nd Airborne Division Fort Bragg, 1968-1970. He was a bank Assistant Manager, that I knew from church. When I was in the Army, I needed a $100 for a necessity, so I went to the bank to borrow the $100. He told me that the bank did not loan small amounts like I requested. They didn't have those rip-off businesses that would loan that amount, but you had to pay back $150.

However, he took out his check book and wrote out a check for $100. He gave it to one of the tellers and she came back with 5 $20 bills. I was in shock. I had never done anything like that before. He handed the money to me and told me to pay it back whenever I could. My wife had just had our first child and she was on goats milk due to a stomach ailment. I did have to tell him why, he just gave it to me. That was in 1970. Our baby was born on June 8th and I was discharged on June 20th. When I separated/discharged on the 20th, I was given my pay for that month and for 46 days leave time I had not taken. Another addition was that when I registered for the draft when I was 18, we were living in Germany and I needed a "Home of Record." Since I married a North Carolina, we decided to stay there. The nice thing about it, the Army paid my way to Los Angeles, California, which was a lot of money, but we moved to Kinston, North Carolina, which was 50 miles away instead of the thousands of miles to Los Angeles.

The last thing I did when I was discharged from the Army, was to go to my friend and repay the $100...no interest, just a handshake and a hug, telling me how good a friend I was. With his "loan" to me, I thought he was the greatest friend I had, until he called me and told me about the Walking Liberty Halves. He then, became the best, best friend I've ever had. We both live in North Carolina now. He's in Fayetteville and I live in Dunn, 30 miles apart. We see each other at church now.

I hope that you, friends, can find someone as good a friend as mine is.[/QUOTE]
