Varieties are one thing, a DDO you can see with the naked eye is another story. When the first uncirculated one goes for 6-figures, they may decide to pay attention. I have said I have no plans in the foreseeable future to sell mine, but if the 5-figure offers for a fine is any indication, the prices at least initially, will probably be near the 1916/16 Buffalo nickel. Or maybe someone will find a few thousand in an old hoard and they will all be worth 1/100th the 16/16 but I'm leaning towards being as rare.
I'm not disagreeing with you--I'm sure a lot of dealers will check. I don't collect Mercs, but I have scored a few naked eye varieties on ebay--and not long ago, someone scored a top 5-figure variety for like $45. I'm only suggesting it may be possible to pick one up..good luck everyone!
Interesting little video about our famous dime here at Coin World: http://www.coinworld.com/videos/201...15/march/monday-morning-brief-mar-9-2015.html The first step Mr. Gibbs gives to this being a success is "A lot of 'em are gonna have to be found" !!! So I am sending lucky vibes to everyone who is actively searching!
Just wanted to thank ANACS, Paul DeFelice, and Christian for getting this done for me so fast. I really appreciate you reaching out to me for this. The dime was on this week's cover of Coin World, among other places - hopefully that will be the nudge to get collectors checking their own coins and hit the shows this weekend to find more.
Very nice. Looks great. I wish they would of inserted it into the slab a bit straighter. Reverse almost looks like it has a slight rotation. But not a big deal, the big deal is your big find! I started looking at my local flea markets for this Merc
I'm sure people have been searching Ebay and dealer's websites as well. With the amount of hype around this one, I'm really surprised no more have been found. Maybe this thing really is pretty scarce.
FYI - Piece #3 was reported yesterday from a dealer in Nebraska. Looks like a VG example. How is the search going for everyone else?
Sure is. This is the cherry-pick of the year. This would just blow me away if I stumbled onto it for the first time. It's what we're all hoping for, really.
A guy in our club, told us about it when he looked at it several months ago. We will be update on 25th at our club, and on the others ones found.
I searched through 100 1919's at my coin dealer's shop this week. Didn't find the true DDO, but did find this one! A few letters in the motto are either repunched recut or it's just machine doubling. The date shows it as well.
Looks like the reverse is rotated a bit, would be interested to see if the other two coins found so far also have the rotated reverse die. Anyone know what die state the three coins found so far are in?
Ok everyone!! I just got back from my local coin show. I was searching the 1919 Mercury Dimes. I found one!! I kid you not. If I didn't have to work right now, I'd get the camera out and take a photo. I will take some photo's of it later this evening. Mine does have a rotated reverse clockwise compared to the obverse. Mine is in circulated condition, marked EF. I had read this post back when it first hit. I still cannot believe that more have not surfaced yet. The show I was at was pretty small. I'd say about 30 dealers or so. I'm still in shock that it looks exactly like the original posted here.
If in XF, it may tie finest known. The discovery piece, one in VF 20 and one in XF so far and your coin makes a population of four that I'm aware of.
