Hello, I have had this since I found it as a kid. My dad used to buy $100 in "pennies" from the bank and pour them all out on a sheet in the living room. Us kids would go through them filling our Whitman albums and otherwise looking for anything interesting. I didn't notice anything about this one until years later. What would be the appropriate name for what is going on at 3:00? Is it a cud, or a die chip? I ask because I have been under the impression that a cud includes the rim completely, and we can still see the rim clearly defined on my coin. I also find it interesting that there is material missing form the rim right near the raised lump. Not sure how this would happen (metal on the die itself would have to have been raised) unless it is just a well-placed PMD coincidence.
It looks like Gunk and dirt making a hill shaped spot on the coin.It could be a cud, can't tell if its raised or not.
Looks to me like it slightly raised! I'm guessing it's a nearly flat CUD, but as always, I could be wrong! Please don't tell my wife I said that!!!
It's not a Cud, as the rim is intact. Could be a planchet lamination, but can't confirm it from the photos. I think the 'gunk' is from circulation dirt after that thing was there. Can the OP take a toothpick and see what's around and under it ?
I stand corrected!! Thanks for the clarification Fred!!! I'm still learning!!! Maybe I'll get one right some day!!! LOL
Most likely a lamination. There are other minor laminations that appear as surfaces cracks from Lincoln's chin and above the second 1 in the date.
