Okay, let me rephrase. I'm not aware of any 1918 overdate variety that lacks the bar through the lower loop. It appears that the market isn't aware of other varieties, either. I am aware that the 8 in the 1918 date looks odd and asymmetric, even in normal strikes, and that hits or scuffs can make it look even more odd. In particular, it's easy to make the top of the upper loop look "flatter than usual". I think that's the only thing that's happening here.
