I'm surprised at the AU58 grading. I was thinking an MS63. I don't see anything drastic to move it below MS60. It is a great looking coin!

Au-58 graders must have had 3 different grades.so the finial top grader must have been in a BAD mood or just being way too conservative:vanish:
:kewl:To me it looks like a sold MS coin

Three different graders could have each assigned an AU58 grade - they don't typically take an average. And perhaps if you saw it in person you would have a different opinion. Images are far from perfect in allowing for examination and grading of coins, and the graders saw it in hand.

The more I think about it Thad I think you should crack out and send to PCGS. Just my opinion, and it might not go well (they are weird with toned coins), but this is a hard coin to find with that kind of eye appeal so they might give an MS 63 RB or so. Who knows. If it grades like that you did well. If you ever sold it as an AU58 would get less than you deserve in my opinion. No one will pay 63/64 money for a graded AU 58. I could be wrong, but just my opinions. I have cracked resubmitted and got the grade my coins deserved. It's a game the graders play, and they ususally win

I thought about it already Boss. Thing is, there's a point of diminishing returns, I have $150 in this coin already, CDN AU bid is a whopping $26. :crying:

I agree with that line of thinking. Particularly with lower value coins, at a certain point, financially (and for that matter, emotionally), it's not worth the extra grading and postage fees.

Thanks for all your comments Mark. I am fortunate in one respect, my local dealer makes my submissions for me. All I have to pay for NGC grading is $25...which I believe is his cost. The only problem riding with his submissions is it usually takes over two months to get my coins back.

Thad- this is where you have to ask yourself why you collect, why you submit coins, and what is the future of your collection? Are you ok with the undergraded coin in the holder? Do you plan on selling? Registry? If your in the registry (I don't think you are as it seems you have lot of raw coins) it would be irritating. Do you collect for the beauty of the coins? Are you competitive (I am- so is RLM :pencil:, at least by my deduction:hail:)? Who will inherit these coins? Are you ok to lose money on the coin in the short run (in too deep on the coin) for the grade you want? My be getting too deep but they are relevant questions on a potential crack out, etc. I personally would actually crack out and send to PCGS. In fact have someone big dog coin person submit for you. Maybe Jack or Mark or whoever you know could submit. I'm empassioned about this because I have been there and cracked out and often got the result I wanted. A dealer friend who does over a million a year in product (not profit), and he will resubmit when he is confident in the grade. He has done it 2-3 times on the same coin where the grade was a big $ difference and got the result he believed he should. I think the question of wear on this coin is very borderline and the eye appeal should tip it to an MS 63 RB +.

I only collect for two reasons, my own enjoyment and for my children when I'm gone. I have no plans on selling. When I submit, it's really for my kids so they have something of concrete value. There's less of a chance of them ever selling my coins and getting less than they are worth.

Right now, I'm going to just leave it as it is. Since I'm not into the registry sets, it's not that big of a deal. I've lost a lot more on coins than this one. I'm OK because I bought a 1909-S (posted already) from the same dealer on the same day as I bought this. I paid highish AU money for the 09S and it graded MS-62.....so it really equaled out. :smile
