I don't remember if I put this up before as I don't see it in my started threads.

1918 Indian Head nickel (can just make out 1918 or possibly 8 over 7 from the picture -see below- at 500% magnification)

The reverse shows what appears to be the top of the D mint mark in the proper orientation.

Is this worth sending in for grading or should I just hold on to it as is?

First off, it has been acid treated to reveal the date and I don't see a D. As such, it is probably worth about 10¢. If it really is a 18/7, even acid treated, it can go north of $100 if certified.

    Thank you for the reply.

When I received it, at the toll booth, I couldn't make out any semblance of a date until I scanned it @ 500%. I'm not familiar with acid treatment or what to look for if a coin has been acid treated. If it was treated, it was before I had possession.

Here is why it looked like D to me:

Now thinking to myself: do I want to spend the $$ to certify a possible 8 over 7 with a possible D mint mark or just keep it as is? I'm leaning toward keeping it as is.

Thank you again for the information.

    Another interesting addendum to this:

I received another 1918 with similar date issue and comparing the two the lower part of the 8 on the most recently acquired coin is more similar in shape and size with the top of the 8 - unlike that of the 1st coin in which the top of the 8 is much smaller than the bottom of the 8). I know that the wear factor helps in how this is perceived but it still looks to be an 8 over the 7 based on a photo I got off of eBay where one is selling.

I'll bite the bullet and send it in for grading. It will be learning experience for me anyway. I'll post the findings.
