I'm new at collecting coins, so I apologize in advance if I have any "dumb" questions. I'm curious about this 1916 penny. Error? Or can someone explain what happened?

So far I see damage. Can you show the Obverse (front) also?

If you are new to collecting there are no dumb questions. You won't learn if you don't ask! Welcome to CoinTalk!

    I see rim damage, and
    flattened rims, in the
    rev. photo posted.

It appears to have been encased at one time.
