1916 wheat penny

    I'm new at collecting coins, so I apologize in advance if I have any "dumb" questions. I'm curious about this 1916 penny. Error? Or can someone explain what happened?

    flattened rims, in the
    rev. photo posted.

    It appears to have been encased at one time.
