Thanks for the link. I didn't realize there were so many differences in the 1916 and 1917. Learned something today! All this knowledge just flying around all over the place. Soak it up! Chuck
QUOTE=davidh;1229561] BTW there are two types of 1916s but I can't find the reference right offhand.[/QUOTE] Let me correct this statement. I was thinking of two things here - there is a Pattern SLQ dated 1916 and, there are two versions of the 1917 SLQ. This is the Pattern 1916: The main differences in the Types 1 and 2 of the 1917 are in Liberty's hair (swept up in the back on Type 1, and pulled down in the back on Type 2 - much like the 1916 Pattern), and the shape of the fold of the drapery at Liberty's right foot (loops flat on the Type 1, and loops upward on the Type 2). Type 1 Type 2
I've never seen dolphins on this coin until now. Plus, there are tons of differences between your 1916 Pattern on top. I noticed about 10 differences immediately.
Check your shoes....... actually it's not ..it, it's only mud ! I hope you didn't pay to much for this. I agree with the consensus, altered coin.
