Dealer in Louisville by the name of Johnny Hurst used to make these out of 1910's by altering the 0 to a 3. He made thousands of these over the years. I've owned two or three of them, one of which I got from Johnny.

I'm sure he is not the only person who has made them.

By understanding that 5 were authenticated, in almost 100 yrs.....that coin would of had to circulate for the same time and no one has plucked it from its spot in circulation. If it was real, you definitely would not have bought it in a lot FROM a dealer. Said dealer would have cherry picked already, and trust me, he knew that was in there. He expected the same reaction hes getting out of you!

There are many "1913" Liberty Head nickels that have been made by altering the date on the coin. This is one of them. I have see them many times before. Unfortunately, it is well known that only 5 authentic 1913 V Nickels were minted...and all of them have very well documented histories and all have known locations. This coin is a fake. Sorry.

"U" can tell the same way anyone else can -- by using a little common sense.

The 1913 Liberty nickel is one of the most infamous coins in all history. An advertisement offering $500 for each one ran in 1919. It was the centerpiece of a Hawaii Five-O episode, for cryin' out loud.

Now, you're saying that there's a previously-unknown sixth example; that it somehow got separated from the other five examples, which all originated from one person, who's widely suspected of arranging for them to be made; that it somehow circulated enough to get worn down to G-VG condition, with no one catching it during all that time.

We can't "tell it's fake". We also can't tell with certainty that there isn't five million dollars worth of gold buried in your back yard. But, in both cases, we'd be nuts to bet the other way.

Pursue it if you want to. There's a vanishingly small chance, I suppose, that it's real; and, if it is, we'll all be very surprised -- assuming we haven't first been wiped out by a giant meteor impact, which is still more likely than finding that this coin is legit. :)

Contact a grading service & send it in to be sure. We can only tell you the odds are against it being real, but if it is, you've got a great coin, worth a lot of money.

Before you start arguing with and alienating the people here who are only trying to help, and give you some info on the coin you have pictured.
