I just bought a v nickel lot of 10 off of ebay for $10. Why you may ask??? I decided that I would take a $10 risk on a 1912 v nickel. I think I see an "s", but are my eyes playing tricks on me?
I see an "S" too, but I thought the mintmarks on these were more scrunched up and not tall like this one appears to be. Could just be me not seeing things right, though.
I see it too... pull up a photo of a 1912 S on the internet and compare the location and shape of the S. To me, it does seem rather large.
Here is a V nickel on the internet, alongside the one I bought. Do you guys think the "s" was added on the the coin later? The thing that sticks out at me is that the coin is mostly worn but the "s" is still there despite the wear.
Your coin is not an S mint marked coin. What seems to be an S on your coin is in the wrong place comparatively, and it is the wrong size.
It is in the right place compared to the other v nickel, and it is slightly smaller than the comparitive.
Where did you find the left-hand image of the S nickel? It doesn't look like any 1912-S I've seen, either. From Heritage Auctions, via Wikipedia: Note how much smaller and more compact the S is in this image, and how the upper loop is distinctly smaller than the lower loop. Here's what it looks like when it's heavily worn. It wears down into a blob.
I mean, don't get us wrong. .. we hope you found a $100 coin, but we just aren't seeing it. I thought Id found a $3000 bust half variety a few weeks ago that I posted about. A few said thy agreed an a few said no chance. But after I got it in-hand I had a $125 coin. Doh! Still, hope you got it.
