I'm afraid I have to go with D. That looks too much like a serif at the upper left, and the whole thing doesn't appear to taper enough toward the top. I'd absolutely want to see it under more magnification before passing on it, though.
Well, what I know of your skills means I have to revisit this with a fresh mind, then. Anybody got a fresh mind I can borrow?
LOL. My skills consist of studying one corroded example really hard, and looking at a lot of photos in the Internet while I did so. I wouldn't gamble my own money on my skills here, don't gamble yours on them!
I voted D, reasons are the mm over the denticles the D is to the left and s should be more towards the right
My first impression is S. It is helpful to know that the S mint mark is the same one used on the 1909 S coins, and as such has plenty of photos to compare to. The mint mark should be square, boxy and have serifs. I hope that helps.
Dunno if this helps, but my '12S looks centered over a denticle, on a couple of D's I have, the upright on the D looks to be over the denticle.
Split the denticles in 1/3rds. Compare the left edge of mm D will be more to the left of center where left edge of the S will be right of center
Thanks, I follow you now. I thought it looked like an S but from what I can see of the MM placement, you have a very good point.
Well shucks. I couldn't help myself but bid on it since if it was an S it would match the other Liberty Nickels I have in my Whitman Album. I guess I have 5 1912-D Liberty Nickels coming my way that I don't need. At least it didn't cost me much to learn this lesson. Thanks for all the input guys.
