Chris: That is just awesome!! Thank you for the great story. I've been telling my coin friends recently about how many times over the years people thought they might have found a VDB proof. They post photos on coin sites and start with the highest of hopes. Yet every time it ends with nothing but disappointment. NOT THIS TIME! Wow! This is really a moment for all coin collectors who still dream and for all the dedicated "cherry pickers". You are right about my obsession with MPLs and especially the VDB. I can't explain why or how it happened but somehow it just hooked me and I've been spellbound every since. Well enough about me - this is about you and your friend's story That was just a wonderful catch by you and is a fine example of gaining knowledge and applying it. When you get that very rare opportunity, you definitely don't want to miss it! Congratulations and don't spend all your "winnings" in one place!
Whatever he spends his "winnings" on, you can rest assured they'll likely be 90% silver and weigh roughly 26.73 grams. And probably be Discovery Coins.
Cascade - I did have one question for you. I understand the owner wants to maintain privacy which I completely respect. What I am curious about is the origin of the coin. Was this in a collection of his that was sitting for some time? If it is a sticky situation in any way, I understand. I just was wondering a bit more about the circumstances. so cool regardless!
The guy's a coin dealer. I'd like to know where he got it. Maybe with luck we can trace the chain-of-custody of it from the U.S. Mint.
Congratulations Chris. What a great story!! This gives hope to those who dream of discovering a pot of gold. They are still out there...........and in incredible shape!
Unfortunately he doesn't remember when or how he bought the specific album it was in. Trust me, he's wracked his brain over it and can't remember. Best guess is that it was part of a large lot purchase sometime last year
Thanks! I guess in reality, it came out of a routine and rather common occurrence. Just reviewing some coins here, yawn. The outcome was anything but common though! One of the most surprising things about this is the pristine condition of the find. It makes the whole thing that much more unusual and memorable.
What does "nvm" mean? I suppose it was too challenging to spell out so we idiots who learned only how to read can understand it? OFI. By the way, that means "Oh Forget It."
Wow!! I step away from computers for a couple of days and I miss this? I sure wish I could have seen this sooner. Although, I would not have been able to say much. I was in a similar situation as @SuperDave with the knowledge of the coin and not able to say anything until Chris made the announcement. I applaud @Cascade for keeping his fingers tied on this for so long. I might have been able to do it as well if I was in a cave in Afghanistan with an AK-47 pointed at my head while being tied up. But I imagine he was able to get some relief by revealing to a few people who do know how to keep their mouths and fingers quiet. I'm not sure why @Rick Stachowski is suddenly quiet. I'm not going to name call or start anything. I just want to point out how disappointed I was to see how hateful and misinformed some of his posts came as. There were absolutely without question, very identifiable marks on this coin that could have only brought about the conclusion that unfolded. I just want to now offer my public congratulations to you Chris and your dealer friend for this once in a lifetime find. I wish you both the best of luck in getting the highest bid brought in at auction.
Tell me about it. It's like we regressed to hieroglyphics. Even cave writing is more intelligible than some of the acronyms and symbols on my new Lexus...
Now that's plumb frightening. Oh, lol, there's no stopping, I don't know what they call it, "technology?"
