As I have said before, you have a lot to learn. And I do not mean that in a derogatory manner. Not in any way shape or form. If I may offer a piece of advice, and not just to you but to anyone - lose the combative attitude and the idea that just because you do not see what others see that they must be wrong. Instead keep a completely open mind in regard to everything you see or read. Give honest consideration to the idea that maybe "they" are right. And always remember this - the truly wise man merely realizes how much he has yet to learn. You do that for 10 years, and you will be well on your way to becoming a respected numismatist.
blah blah blah... why not try the converse? Open your mind that there might be better ways than the established archaic standards that were adopted before things like consumer grade laser identification? You my friend. IMO of course. are the one with the closed mind as evidenced by the stereotypical "this is the way it is and it will never change so you better except it or else...." lol we are talking about fools here who pay thousands of times the face value under the premise of a collectible. Myself included! What makes you think that someone can not learn in a fraction of time what it (apparently) takes you 10 years to learn? Talk about close minded. rather than chastising me, practice what you preach in your signature. As a red named administrator, is this the way to gain respect from other new collectors? Wow IMO you have a lot to learn with leading a group. For example: Can you intelligently explain why laser identification is not used for coin Identification/grading. and please dont start with it has to be in hand. Luminosity and other coin attributes can also be measured. Of course a human should check the results of a computer analysis. There are so many lobbyists in DC. is it unfathomable to laser ID dies? From my limited understanding I bet that technical information already exists on modern coinage. I thought I made it clear, that if you don't like the way I write or the things I say....... wait! maybe that was another thread. Combative? Combative with who/what? You didn't have to write the above. you cast the first combative stone here by directing your post directly to me.. I started this thread as a form of a journal..... that I am sure of. If you don't have anything constructive to contribute, butt out. Thanks! In closing, may I remind you of this: Coin Talk Code of Honor 1. Post unto others as you would have them post unto you. 2. Keep it clean, like a 1950s family television show. 3. If you don't like the coin, don't trash the person.
EyeEatWheaties You are combative with most every post. Can't you see that? You insult everyone that does not agree with you. I'm done with you till you learn to act like an adult.
Awwwwww... I really like/ no love the coins and your posts/interaction. Oh well, thanks for your contributions, including the ones about image posting. They are helpful in my education with coin collecting. In a disagreement, I do my best to support my opinions with facts, I only ask that others do the same. It's the internet, if you don't want to play, I understand, just take a sec and think about the following: adj. combative - inclined or showing an inclination to dispute or disagree, "a style described as abrasive and contentious"; argumentative - given to or characterized by argument; "an argumentative discourse"; "argumentative to the point of being cantankerous"; "an intelligent but argumentative child" Curiosity and as an example of my posting style, I found that definition and I agree with it (see what I am doing here?) My posting style is intentional, I am trying to get peoples honest thoughts on subjects outlined in my first posts. Diplomatic nicey nice posts do little to get opposing viewpoints. I find very little questioning of authoritative practices. I find more often than not, that many of these practices have been in place since before the technological advances we have today............... and when I do find info that challenges those practices, like the very helpful CU link that illini420 posted......... well................ What a shame that Duane's project of 2 1/2 years ago just fizzled! I wonder, was he also chastised in a way to get him to stop? Seems the thread was head that way towards the end. He was into an exercise that could have been helpful to everyone better understand authentication of MPL's. But whatever, if you have a problem with seeing the content because of the tone, oh well.. Time to get this thread back on track. I should have ignored Doug's post. I fell victim to my own type of ruse. lol
You apparently don't even have any idea that I was agreeing with you about it being BS now do ya ? There's a TON of things that the TPGs do that is BS ! But then that's one of things that you have yet to learn. As I said, drop the combative attitude and keep an open mind. I am merely trying to help you, not trying to tell you are wrong about something.
EyeEat, my bad. i wasnt clear there. I meant that I didnt see the differences in the coins YOU posted that you got from heritage...their pics vs yours. I was missing any major difference aside from color. As for mine, yes that is the actual color on the obverse. I place it at AU58 if not low unc. Its one of those depends who looks at it coins. As for the other stuff. Eye, yeah you do tend to be aggressive sometimes. You could tone it down some for sure. But its not nearly as bad as I have seen. GD, I agree with Eye 100%. You are just as close minded as you accuse Eye of being. If people dont collect within the parameters you set down, they arent real collectors. "So virtually no professional or an experienced collector will ever wear gloves." Thats your statement. That is a close minded statement. Because I tell you this, you try to handle any UNCs or proofs or mine without gloves, that one coin will be the absolute last one of mine you would handle. You can drop a coin with or without gloves. But without gloves printing one of my coins is a lot more likely. But if you dont mind handling yours without gloves, thats your perogative. I'm certainly not going to say you arent professional or experienced simply because I don't agree with you. See, open minded. And Thats just one example.
Smoke what I said about gloves is a fact, not an opinion. The only thing closed minded about it is when people who don't know that it is a fact refuse to acknowledge it as such. What having an open mind means is that a person can admit that they are wrong about something and learn from their mistakes.
Wrong again. I have read enough of your posts to know that you that you rarely post anything positive about the TPG's - furthermore it is a FACT - that you don't post images of Certified coins from the TPG's. You either don't own any or what? It is my opinion that you could learn that (if you did indeed agree with me) posting your knowledge and sharing support in reply would have ------- fill in the blank! lol.. talk about a contradiction. Here again, I read back through this thread. The rules obviously don't apply to you. When you write your posts directly to me with the word "you" it is you! who is making direct attacks, ie combative. - Can you not see that or are you just playing me again? Please, I am begging. either share your knowledge of the subject at hand or don't post. Don't be so close minded that you fail to see the content because of the tone. Here again, this is my opinion. Since you apparently (due to the anonymous nature of Screen Names) are a self appointed expert (as indicated by your style of posting) would/could do more positive in the coin community to back up your blustering by putting forth evidence that supports, as you put it, "facts". Please go back and read my opening post and reason I created this thread. It is about learning and sharing that knowledge. I created it because I feel I now have enough examples of one coin, to post images (the facts) as examples, in order to learn. If you feel that I am right or wrong about something coin related, then please post in a manner that supports your position otherwise, you come off as a self appointed expert, who doesn't even post about coins you own. IMO the only credibility you have to anyone new, is in your red screen name. Riiiiiiight...... you have owned/own hundreds of thousands upon thousands of coins and worked as a TPG grader for decades and taught Hall, Lange, Albrecht etc. everything they know, all backed up by decades of research and subsequent publications. You have personally electronically digitized and cataloged all your holdings and while doing so, found dozens of new varieties.... And now, in order to advance and improve, you have your own lobby, lead congressional hearing sub-committees representing numismatics, have your own key card to mint archives. You support the idea of integration of modern technology and are doing what you can to advance the hobby/business into the 21st century. You are currently over-seeing the writing of code and parameters for identification and grading software.. Wow! you are the man! Many Props! Thanks for keeping an open mind and learning something new! :hail:
I posted those images as an example of real time, real life, representation of the highest grade available for purchase of that coin. The way I understand RED copper in high grades 66 - 67 - 68 is that 67's must or do have superior luster. A 68 is going to highly lusterous, near perfect strike, barely a mark on it. (there is only one 68RD and my understanding of that coin is that it has turned in the holder) The Heritage images do not accent the luster on those 67's and frankly, I think they hide tics and dings. I knew that to some degree when I bid on the first 67RD posted. What surprised me is that the reverse is nearly Red/brown on the first coin and not consistent with the obverse. The marks are exaggerated in my images compared to in hand - there is/should be an interpretation/knowledge of lighting and such that should be applied when looking at digital images. I am not positive that the coin would even grade as RED if resubmitted, yet it sure looked OK RED in the Heritage images. The second coin I viewed as a dog. No luster, frankly it looked brown in color. Not entirely unusually as I have several examples of coins graded red that are a light brown (see below) It was on a whim that even I put a bid in on it. I when I found out I won it, I was mad at myself. Imagine my surprise when it turned out to be the 2nd nicest of the (5) I have! This is a 64RD - it is possible that it has "turned" in the holder. know way for me to know what it looked like when encapsulated.
Had you bothered to check, you would have found that; A. he no longer owns any coins. Sold his collections some time ago. B. GDJMSP is his name - Gordon Douglas John Michael Spencer Prather.
Yeah, I think I need to reimage this one.. either i over killed the sharpness post pic on the reverse, or I didn't get the obv in focus..... need to dig that one back out and re-do it.
awwwwwww.. darn! I was hoping for a cool variation like a worn obverse die coupled with an MPL die! although I think I can make out the center C scratch in CENT.
Lance - Excellent 67's? If they are, FWIW - the 1st coin in the first post of this thread has a CAC sticker and I think yours are nicer. Mike, you love teasing me. There is the VDB Silver Commem, the 67RB's, now this? Where did you find that? I thought it was a puzzle pic at first until I saw the shadows. I guess they are still around. An image program that lets you cut an image into pieces and then you can slide them back together? Anyways I digress... mike, throw in the puzzle with the RB's.... K? TX! Where is my tracking # anyhow? I am on a different computer tonight. HP basic with windows 7 and one of these 16:9 flatscreens. Man, my images look overexposed. ON the other hand, everyones image is super bright. No one commented on the shades of red post. I think I might broach the subject of Machine Doubling next. I don't know other about other wheats but it seems that mmmmm 20% of the VDB's have some MD.....
